Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Services

At MATTHEW WALKER COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH CENTER we strive to make sure our services are comprehensive enough to meet the needs of the entire family. In addition to our quality medical and dental care services we also provide on-site WIC services.

 

What is WIC?

WIC stands for Women, Infants, and Children. WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that provides nutrition and health education, healthy foods, and other services free of charge to Davidson county families who qualify. The goal of WIC is to help keep pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under the age of 5 healthy.

 

What Does WIC Offer?

The goal of WIC is to help keep pregnant and breast-feeding/postpartum women and children under the age of 5 healthy. We do this by providing:

  • Nutrition counseling and education
  • Breast-feeding promotion and support
  • Vouchers for free healthy foods
  • Referrals for medical and dental care, health insurance, child care and other services that benefit the entire family
  • Immunization screenings and referrals

 

What Are the Medical Benefits of WIC?

WIC is an effective way to improve the health of pregnant women, new mothers and their infants. WIC participation has also been linked with longer gestation periods, higher birth weights and lower infant mortality. Other benefits include:

  • Improve growth of nutritionally at-risk infants & children
  • Lower rate of iron deficiency anemia
  • Improve dietary intake of pregnant & postpartum women
  • Improve pregnancy weight gain
  • Earlier prenatal care
  • Improve children’s intellectual development
  • Improve children’s dietary intake

 

Who is eligible?

To participate in WIC you must meet the following requirements:

  • Live in Davidson County
  • Have a nutritional need (determined by WIC staff)
  • A pregnant or breastfeeding woman or a child under the age of 5 and
  • Have a household family income less than or equal to the guidelines shown:

If you are pregnant, you should count each baby as one additional family member.

If you receive WIC benefits, it will not affect your eligibility for the following programs:

  • TennCare
  • Food Stamps/
  • Free/Reduced school lunch for children

 

What Do I Bring to the WIC Office?

Please bring identification for the infant and/or child along with identification for mom. Acceptable forms of identification include but are not limited to:

  • Photo ID such as a passport or driver's license
  • Birth certificate
  • Social security card
  • Crib card
